Default 450R oil question

What is the amount it holds. And do you guys usually swap the oil faster than they say, expecially on the first on at break in?

The engine holds .82 liters so not much and the tranny holds .55 liters so not much there either,, change my oil atfer every couple of ride,to me its cheap insurance, you have a high preformance engine spinning alot of revs so there no way you can change it TOO often

Overfill your transmission by an extra 100cc's! Some of the gears are only lubed by splash, and running extra oil insures that they will never be left high and dry. (This is more of a problem with the dirt bike, but why take a chance????)

Default 450R oil question

My buddy has an 06, and I am begining to love this engine! I have an 04.<a href="http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm">

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm</A>

On most new engines, I change the oil and filter at 1 hr (gets the metal shavings out early), then again at 5 hrs, and then at 10 hrs. On this engine, I would do it even more often.......some say every hour.

Use Honda GN4, a petroleum oil during break-in (about 10 hrs), then I would recommend you switch to a synthetic. I run Maxima Extra (http://www.maximausa.com/), an ester synthetic and the finest oil I have been able to find, in both my engine and transmission sides. Many prefer to run a transmission specific lube in the trans, like red Honda HP Trans Oil, or Maxima MTL.

Some good advice about oils: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

Default 450R oil question

Listen to Reconranger. I too overfill the transmission. I use Maxima Ultra in both sides now. These are high reving engines and need to be changes often. I just did mine last night and for some reason I slept better knowing what was in there waiting for me this weekend. Dont listen to those guys who say go to wal-mart and get some $2 a quart oil. You get what you pay for. I going to see just how long I can go before the top end needs to be rebuilt. On the tranie side remember there is a check hole on the right side. It has a little arrow pointing to it. unscrew it and add your oil until it start to come out then screw it in and add some more. Look in your owners manual for how to and how much. Dont over tighten these bolts or you"ll be in for another major headach. Swithch to a good synthetich (sp?) after breakin.
You need to uncork this quad on both ends to see what it really will do. Open up the air box lid,add a uni or k&n filter W/outwear and rejet the carb and add a slip on exhaust. It's like night and day. Or you could just add the HRC kit and be done.

Default 450R oil question

camo-Interested in why you are running Maxima Ultra? Ultra is Extra, with an additional ester that makes things VERY slick. Sort of an organic moly, if you wish. Plus, Ultra comes in some rather unconventional weights, like 0W10 and 5W50.

I would certainly run Ultra in my engine side if I were a racer, but I don't think I need to run it as a recreational rider. Plus, I would never run it in my trans. What bothers me is the big stretches in the weights (5 to 50), which is going to require more viscosity index improvers (easily sheared by a transmission) than an oil with a narrower weight range. This is less of a problem with esters, which have naturally high viscosity indexes anyway, but still it bothers me some.

I talked to Maxima, and they said if I wanted the BEST, to run Extra in both the engine and trans!

Now I'm confussed again. I thought you said the best oil out there was Maxima Ultra. I was using MTL in the trans side but thought it was to thin. I want the best for my R so what is the right combanation to use? Are you saying that Ultra is too slick? Set me straight one more time. Have a good weekend.

I use Spectro SX4 or something like that in the engine side, and Spectro gear lube, don't remember the weight. It seems to do a really good job. what do you guys think of this oil, or should i chage. the engine oil is fully synthenic

Default 450R oil question

camo-I put all the possible questions to Maxima (a bunch of different ways), and their answer was that Extra in both sides is the best way to go. There is nothing wrong with Ultra, just that I feel it is more likely to sheer down than is Extra because of Ultras large stretch in weight. And, there is nothing wrong with MTL, it is just that Extra has a higher ester content, which gives it a greater film strength.

I'll post Maxima's reply in a minute, when I can find it........

Default 450R oil question

Here, I had inquired about which weight MTL to run in what temperatures. Note the last line:

"Thanks for your interest in Maxima. Our MTL line is very successful and is a top seller in our line-up. For longer rides with extended engine running time I suggest running MTL-E (Endurance) 85wt. For smaller-type rides (i.e., MX or 1 hour rides) I would use MTL-R 80wt.

I personally have a Honda 450 and run MTL-R in the transmission. When I do longer baja rides (100 mile days) I try to run 85wt in my bike, but have run 80wt without any oil consumption or issues.

Our MTL fluids are petroleum based with synthetic polymers, but we market them as petroleum since the base oil is petro based. We have tested ester-based transmission fluids with good success, but the market hasn’t supported the additional cost associated with such an oil. If you want the best…I would suggest running Maxum4 Extra 10w40 or 15w50 in both sides of your bike."

To me, Ultra is more of a "racing" oil for those who want to milk the most power out of their engines (through reduced friction), and Extra is the better choice for the recreational rider.
