Hey. I had my heart set on a 250r. And in the next couple of months i will have the money to buy one. But here is the thing,, i mostly ride trails, so someone told me i should difently get a 400ex since a 2 stroke woulb not be so good for trails becase of to much clutch work. Would a 400 be better for me? I dont just ride trails. i also ride rail road tracks, feilds and stuff. The trails i have have alot of strights..
Here is some back around info; i am 15 been riding a 1999 wolverine for 2 years and have totaly out grown it. I manhandle it. i am 6'0 and 150 and well build.
So what would be better? And i dont care about matinence or stuff like that.
Thanks
matt

Mxer
I go for the 400ex is a better handling 4-wheeler ...Two strokes are prone to fowl plugs in woods and if there are hills you dont want a plug to fowl half way up it ....the suspenson is awsome and very forgiving ...i highley recommend it to you ......Goodluck

The 250r is faster, handles better, and you get more looks when your on one.

The 400 will handle alot better in the woods. When you are on a 4-stroke you don't have to shift as often as a 2-stroke. I ride through tight woods using only second and maybe third when it opens up (on my 400). On a 2-stroke, you are constanly shifting. Plus you have more wheelspin which equals more sliding around, and less control. Now don't count the 400 out on speed. There are some simple mods you can add to make it run 80 mph+. Just change your sprocets around. However you will lose some low end. I will tell you this, my 400 has been nothing but fun, no problems.

THE 400EX IS GREAT IF YOU WANT A FUN FUN RIDE. BUT IF YOU WANT TO FLY GET A 250R (THE MOST AGGRESIVE ATV ON THE PLANET)! THE HANDELING IS UNMATCHED AND IT IS BY FAR THE BEST JUMPER OF ALL TIME!
2 STROKES FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree with the guys who said get the 400ex.Go with a newer machine.Youll end up spending around 3 grand for a 250r thats in good condition.Your spending 3 grand on a quad thats over 10 years old.Buy a 400ex for a grand more and you wont have to worry about wrenching every weekend. You just have to worry about finding places to ride Take our advice, the only time i would choose the r would be if you raced on the track all the time.If you did the dunes i would say go with the banshee.Trails 400ex,well unless you can afford a Brand new Raptor

Well, let me tell you, I own both, an 86 TRX250R and a 2000 400EX. The only way I can tell them apart is the noise. I have always been a 2 stroke fan. I just bought this 400 to see what it was like. It is a great machine. Both are great machines. Parts are definitely cheaper for a 400. You will have to maintain each machine. Adjusting valves once a month on the 400 or checking the top end on the 250R twice a year. Each machine has its maintenance requirements. As far as having to clutch a 2 stroke in the woods, I think that is BS. If the machine is set up right, like mine, you can chug up a hill on an R as easy as the EX. I foul a plug about once every 3 months. You should try to ride each machine before you buy. I am extremely happy with each machine. Too bad we can't have a quad that has the rev of a 2 stroke and the torque of a 4 stroke. Just don't buy someone else's junk. Take someone along with you, and take a compression gauge if you are looking at an R. Compression should be in the 150-160 psi range. Check all around the quad. Forget about how pretty it is, look at the mechanical parts. Too many people fall for how clean or pretty a quad is and get screwed. This is just my opinion. Do what you want with it. Good luck. Oh, by the way, you are a smart guy for choosing between two Honda's.
