Default chain tension

alright i have a 2003 400ex. we bought it used. at first i was like " oh cool this is pretty fast " ( again i use to ride a 250 lol ). so my cousins g/f said she'd let me get wide open and she'd get next to me to see how fast i was going. well she kinda did it wrong. i was in 4th as i was passing her hit 5th and pinned it and pulled away pretty good. when i stopped at the end of the road ( country road ) i asked her how fast she was going and she said 50. 50 MPH THATS IT. well today i was looking at my chain and noticed theres quite a bit of slack in it. so i was wondering if more slack could be slowing me down because i know i should be going atleast a little faster than i was. and isnt there supposed to be about a half inch of slack in chain with me sitting on the four wheeler. help is greatly appreciated because if its slowing me down id like to get it fixed because my friend on a warrior wants to race, and another friend on a stock 400 wants to line em up. thanks in advance
