So I was wondering what you really need to do to keep these new bikes running right... I have had bikes in the past and never did anything but change the plugs every once in a while, and change the oil frequently.... Well I have heard with these new 450r's they require soo much more.... Is this true.... what do you all recommend. staying on top of? For example how often do I need to change coolant, adj valves, etc. Thanks for the help I now have (2) 450r and want them to last as long as my 200x and 3003ex and 350x did...

I would absolutely run a SYNTHETIC OIL, especially when running in the hot southwest desert! After much study, my choice is Maxima Extra (http://www.maximausa.com/products/4s...synthextra.asp), an ester based synthetic. 15W50 in summer and 10W40 in winter.
Some basic oil facts. All the stuff that pertains to the 450/250 dirt bikes, goes for your quad: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm
Change oil and adjust the valves frequently! Other stuff is just routine, like any bike.

Thanks for the info on the OIL really interesting stuff.... I am already using synthetic oil and I change the crap more often than you should, the extra money on oil is worth it... I also clean my filter after every ride, and adjust the clutch and brakes all the time.... how much should it cost to adjust the valves anyone know any shops in AZ that do it cheap??????????????????????????????

Honda has a vested interest in presenting its products as being "low maintenance". So, those maintenence intervals in the owners manual are based on riding in ideal conditions.......that don't actually exist in the real world. So take your advice from real world users, who have tested Honda's machines way harder than Honda R&D ever did!
You are always safer overdoing maintenance, than underdoing it.

And, the least bit of dirt will be murder on your valves, so service your air filter frequently. I would NEVER run a K&N!
Run extra oil in your trans.
