What did you upgrade on your 400ex & why?

Just wondering. Seems like there is tons of stuff to upgrade on a 400ex, so I was wondering what you did and why. For example, is underside armor really necessary?

I did away with the stock bore and stroke, the stock carb, the stock muffler, the stock rear tires, the stock handle bars, and the stock seat cover.
Why?
To make it more better. I trail ride mine and all though, they have torque, I wanted more. The 440 stroker is awsome. I can run 16/37, with 22's, in the tight trails of Washington state. It is not the fastest 400ex around, but with the cam selection and the porting, it is a torque monster.
I do not have much for under protection and the frame shows it. My frame is so close to junk, its not worth saving. If yours in in good shape, the 75 or 100 dollars would be worth the protection. Plus they slide over logs and what not, easier, have the frame skid.

GEEEEZZZ!! 15/37 gearing?!! That thing must make alot of torque!!
My 400 has a Uni filter, Hotcams stage 2, jetted stock carb, HMF slip on, and 14/38 gearing. I run 20" tires and mostly trail ride. Mine tops out at about 60, but it will run with 450's up to that point. (but there are few places on the trails that we even get above 3rd gear let alone wide open in high)
Our trails are tight, with alot of hills and hollers. We also run some mx tracks that are also tight.
I don't like running 1st gear when trail riding. It seemed like I was either bogging the motor real bad when I ran 2nd, or wound it hard when running 1st. So I started with the pipe and airbox. That helped alot, but I still wanted more. I canged the front sprocket, and that really made a difference!! It is so much quicker, easier to get the front end up, and just seems like it is geared right now. I got a great deal on the cam.
I would love to put some good shocks on the front of mine. I believe that they would be a great idea if you ride hard at all.

It would HAVE to make alot of torque just to pull those gears with those tires. I would call that airplane gears, because it should fly on top speed.
Any time you increase the number of teeth on the front sprocket, it increases top speed. If you decrease the number on the rear, it also increases speed, that is if you have enough motor to pull it. When you increase the rear tire size, it also increases top speed. The stock gearing is 15/38, with the stock 20" tires, which are actually short for a 20" tire, the 400's run 65+/-. With his gearing and tires, that thing should run 75+ easy. It would have to make alot of torque to pull the average size rider and be ridable on any trails.
