jetting?????????????
#1
i live at about 3600 ft. i bought the 06 trx 450. it has the 120 jet in it, wich is sea level. i tried to take the airbox lid off it and would not run good. at about 1/2 throttle it would bog and stop eccelerating. i am affraid of putting to small of a jet in it becasue i do not want to lean out to much and damamge the piston. any thought???? and any suggestions on a pipe that you can actually get some sound out of?

about the jetting-call honda and see what they say. ask to talk to a field service representative or an engineer
and as far as the pipe, you'll end up changing jetting anyways if you go to a new pipe. talk to the pipe manufacturer and see if they sell a jet kit for that pipe and your machine.
With the machine set up for sea level, the machine will simply run richer than normal at a higher altitude. You could just try riding it as-is right now and check the spark plug color after a good ride. Tan or grayish in color is right. Black is too rich and white is lean. Honda jets lean at the factory so with the richness compensation from the altitude, you might actually be right in the middle where you want to be.

i tried to call honda and they said that they cannot recomend anything, i have to play with it. but i figured that i would be a little rich at 3600 ft with a sea level jet, so that is why i could not figure out why when i tool the cover off the airbox it would not rev up, it is like the air gets to strong and cuts out the fuel. the only thing that i can think of is that it is already jetted for the higher elevation. but the local hondfa shop has techs that won't say a thing.

Put a bigger jet in and see what happens. I'm running a 170 main at about 1000 ft elevation. take your time and dont over tighten those jets or the real headach starts.

actually, he would need to put a smaller main jet in for the altitude. The air is thinner as you go up, so the mixture becomes rich since the air molecules are farther apart. You need fewer fuel molecules to compensate, so you need a smaller main jet.

If you want a pipe with great performance and sound I suggest the HMF. I love it. The company also will assist you in jetting your carb also.

wow, a 170 at 1000 ft. is that a stock quad. becasue i have a 120 and they say that is sea level. i am thinking of putting a 115 in and seeing what happens. my last manual that i had for my dirt bike gave me jet numbers and what elevation that a jet size would cover. i cannot find that with the quad. and the service manuals are hard to get localy.
