The 400ex is a great bike, but it's no contest against the big bores which indeed do leave it in the dust in a drag race or hill climb. However, with the xr650 engine it would be a contender without question.
This topic has been discussed pretty much since the 650 engine was released back in 00 or 01, and this isnt the first time someone swapped this engine into another chassis. There is a member here who has the engine in a warrior.

more power, more weight , and all the torque.
and if they do make a frame that can handle all that extra motor, it will gain more then 40 pounds......
its not as simple as putting a XR650 motor into a 400EX and selling it. honda cant and wont do that....
think about it....

I have the older air-cooled version 650L in my Warrior, it responds to mods just as well as other big-block 650+ motors out there and runs in the pack, I'm putting one in a 400ex chassis as well soon, Honda just does'nt have a clue what they are missing in sales if they would build it, too bad.

Ski-Doo recently released their Mach Z 1000 TRIPLE. It's not a 4-stroke, it's a 2-stroke. Now, imagine somehow getting that engine into a 400ex? Or just put it into a DS because it's another Rotax engine.
