Some good basic oil info: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm
Some basic synthetic oil info. (Just for the record, Amsoil and Mobil 1 are group IV PAO, and Rotella is a group III synthetic.): http://www.maximausa.com/technical/l...beNews2002.pdf
As far as synthetics go, they have many properties that make them superior to petroleum, so you are ahead running a synthetic. And, the Ester Synthetics are superior to the other two types of synthetics, so my choice after much study on the matter is Maxima Extra (http://www.maximausa.com/products/4s...synthextra.asp). The only downside to synthetics is a somewhat higher price.
Whatever oil type you choose, be sure it is Motorcycle Specific API SG/JASO MA. This will insure that it has a descent add pack to protect high pressure areas, like your transmission gears and cam.
In Texas I would run 20 or 15W50 in the hot summer months, and 10W40 in the relatively mild winter months. If I lived further north where it is cooler, I would run 10W40 in summer and 5W30 in winter.
