You could have ruined your rings and or scored your cylinder wall. Is the oil made to run in your ATV? If it's for your ATV then you have problems, if not drain it, drain the filter and add oil made for your ATV. If it's still smoking refer to the first part of this reply. =[

Well I hope it's OK, If you feel it's ok when you change the oil change the filter also. I didn't mention changing it earlier cause if it was f,uped there was no sence in changing it to see.

You should be able to go to honda's website and get all the info you need about which oil is for your machine. You can also go to the oil manufactures website and see what the oil you used is blended for. Good Luck. =]

i talked to a few buddies of mine who own a 400 ex and they said it shouldent be the oil and that theres did the same thing after changing the oil..it only smokes for like 1minute on a cold start and runs fine..the only thing i could think it could be would be the valve seals? mabe there leaking a little bit?..?

in a 400ex u cant use oil with moly......moly is short for some longer word that i cant remember haha....but because the engine and tranny share the same oil in the 400ex the engine oil cannot have moly or it will mess up your clutch....best bet it to go to the closest honda dealership and get the honda oil....i run 10 w 40....WITHOUT MOLY

I'm running 20w50 KawaChem non-synthetic. I'm running the thicker oil because it's so hot where I ride that it helps it to not break down as easy. Also if it smokes a little after you changed the oil you may have added too much because technically it only needs 1.95 qts but I usually just pour the whole 2 in. My valves seals are also a bit leaky so it smokes a tad. I just make sure to check it before I ride.
