Ive had friends that got the 300 and later realized it wasnt enough power. Im no expert on the 300EX. But I am very familiar with the 400EX. So its going to be hard for me to tell you wich one is best in your situation. However, speaking from that perspective, I feel the 400EX has a lot of potential for the money. The EX's bottom end has a limit of about 60hp. If you go beyond that, you'll have tranny issues. Right now, thats about where Im at with NOS.

By the way, NOS works pretty good as long as the correct "air to fuel" ratio is maintained. But, for most of the nitrous systems out there, thats impossible. The reason why people fry thier motor with NOS is because they tune it, and the outside temp goes up, creating more nitrous pressure in the bottle, thus feeding more nitrous, which turns into oxygen in the combustion chamber. A higher level of oxygen will cause a lean condition, pre-ignition and even detonation. All are serious problems for an engine. Several companies have developed regulators that keep the nitrous constant. That takes all the guess work out of nitrous.

Maybe I will eventually consider big bore (or just sell my 400ex and get a 450). I'm concerned about the reliability of a 440ex though. Will it wear out quicker? Also, do you really have a 460ex or is it just a typo?

The problem with the 440 is heat. So, you have to get a decent oil tank/cooler and run a good semi-synthetic. I also run a tad more octane than I truely need for my piston. Im at 5000 feet with a 12:1 piston and I run VP C12, which is 108 octance and a very cool fuel (temperature wise). All that keeps the temp down and reliabilty up. Mine now feels a tad bit cooler than stock, but if i run nitrous, that all changes. The only issues I have with my build is the tranny and that related directly to the extra horsepower Im running with Nitrous. I'll end up replacing 2nd gear in 1-2 years. I dont have any other issues. I have 2 years on this crank and rod and there are no noticable signs of problems. I ran the stock crank with the 440 for two years and no problem with that either - she looked like new when we took her out. Again, Ive run HP4 in the motor the whole time so Im sure thats helped.

eeek. sorry. I had a slip of tongue. I KNOW that I pretty much need more power, and am defnintely moving to a pre-05 400ex for sure. What I wanted to know is what you knew about overbore kits (i.e. wiseco, JE, powroll, etc.) and which one best. I was considering a Wiseco 426 (still the stock liner) to save money on the machine work by not re-sleeving. Then I would follow up with an appropriate cam, exhaust and who knows-maybe a rev box

I have about 4250 dollars to work with, so I'll probably buy a torn-to-poop or semi-torn-to-poop 400 and perform an amazing overhaul.

And thanks for that little blurb about the 2001 carb size switch. I've been trying to find out what years had what features and what I should look for.

No problem. Let me know if you have any more questions. I usually hang out in the Can-Am section, so you can PM me anytime.

By the way, thats a good way to go - buy an old EX and build her up. I love seeing the look on the faces of the 450 guys when I run mine. She is a sleeper for sure.

My 440 kit was the Duncan bore and sleeve. However, Im pretty sure there are companies out there doing the new bore and nikasil plate with no sleeve. That would be better from a cooling standpoint and even gain some HP over the bore and sleeve.

That's awesome. I'm definitely a bargain basement powersporter (ebay and swaps all the way) and that's obviously why I'd do a project as opposed to buying a new or semi-new one. Plus, labor is free since I can do all my own work except for machining and case splitting.

...and thanks again. now I know how Nikasil works. I thought it was just a better type of press-in sleeve made of Nikasil meat, not a plating that just went over the aluminum. (do you know how thick it is, b/c that seems weird to me, having worked on engines where you can actually see bore taper with a plastic ruler.)

I actually dont know how thick it is - Im sure there's a standard out there. But its what all the engines are going to. There are several advantages over steel sleeve. For one thing, the cooling is better. Its also much slicker, so the piston has less friction. Also, the headgasket can remain larger and work better because the space that was taken up by the sleave can now be used for a better seal since the gasket will be larger. This is more of an advantage with the water cooled motors.
