400ex vs. 450r handling.

one really cheap easy upgreade for the forn of the 300ex, get some 400 ex A arms, I have found em for under 100 bucks for all 4 all the time. get some 400 ex shocks( they are ALOT longer than the 300 though and makes the bike sit really high unless you get that lowering mount that places the upper shock mounts out and up a little to lower the bike. with 400 shocks it is back up sitting nicely. I cant tell you how it handles/jumps because Ive only ridden it with the 400 A arms and lowered on the 300 shocks, but I have 400 shocks sitting there thatr have been test fit to work. also I have a 250x frame which is basically a 300 frame, and upon measuring the swingarm from a 400 will bolt right in, not sure though if not having the pivot bolt go through the engine if it loses much strength? and the sprockets look like they would line up perfect. I have never test fit that though because the swingarm hasnt been off the 400 since I thought about doing that.

Thanks so much for the in-depth. I had already looked around at doing the exact same thing, but I figured with the engine mods I'd have to do to stay near a stock 400 that I might as well spend my money on a used 400. I crave horsepower. Remember at the beginning of this story, I said I rode a yfz 450. Like any normal man, my mind was broken by that experience, and I crave outrageous amounts of horsepower. ...Anybody want a really nice 300ex? Shes all freshened up with warranty! The 450r can be a good trail quad if geared right,Im running 13/39 sprockets and it works well in the woods and still has ok top end. With this setup it feels like the 400ex(gearing) but with tons more power and no lugging in the tight woods. Both are good quads and handle well ,but the 450 is a much more serious quad. its fast.

well, about that YFZ thing, my girlfriends got the 05 YFZ, jetted, K&N, DRD pipe, and geared down a bit, (I think one more tooth up front) and then there is the 300ex thats set up on the flat track. it is a 330 big bore, it has a web cam, I think port/polished head, FMF exhaust, jet kit, K&N. not sure on the gearing but she was on her 450, and her dad was on his raptor. and we were in oregon dunes at this part where its kinda wet sand that they drag race down, well of course when the raprtor and YFZ get up towards there ~70 MPH speeds they leave me in the dust. but that 330 barely loses ground up til Id say 40-45, also though they told me sand tires bog it down and I was on dirt tires while they were running paddles. but the 460 they got also bows to the 450, although only by a couple quad lengths and then a few MPH top speed. I know what you mean though man, that YFZ is one fun machine, feels like it'll rev forever. I like the feeling of the 400ex alot more than the YFZ though, and the low end of the 460 stroker, and I hear the TRX450R is the low end monster compared to the YFZ, so I know what quad I want when I finally save the cash to buy one. another thing though are youre shocks completely shot on that 300, my cousins 250EX I have come down on some HARSH landings and althugh never smoth it has never been too bad. you can definately feel her bottomout though if you get too much air, I hit this 6 foot table top in mexico on it and I meant to land on the other side going down but I overshot it and landed at the base on thew other side. now that didnt feel very good.

I thought the 450 shocks on the 400, were a little to stiff. I weigh 260 pounds, so a lighter guy would have more issue with that. The works when ordered new are dialed for you and your style.

Wow. Saved me. I weigh 130 pounds. That would have been quite a wild ride. (Still tryin to sell the 300 though.) Thanks a bunch! Also, what do you know about Elka/ohlins/fox shocks? any preferences?
