Help with first oil change on 07 Rubi
#1
Can someone guide me through an oil change on my new 07 Rubicon. I am not mechanically inclined, so I hope there is not much to an oil change. I have 10 hours and 100 miles on my new Rubi, so should I change the spark plug too. Will it make a big difference to the power of my Rubi if i put a K&N air filter on it?

Oil changes are very simple. You do not need to change your spark plug, not for quite a while. You can take it out and check the gap and clean the carbon off of it, but it will last quite a while.
Make sure you have all the tools you will need for the oil and filter change. Socket (or wrench, but a socket is much easier) for drain plug (bolt), socket (or wrench) for the filter change. Correct weight oil and filter. Pan to drain oil into and a place to properly dispose of the old oil.
Run your ATV until engine is at operating temp so the oil will drain better and any particles in the engine will be suspended in the oil. When its hot, put the pan under the quad and remove the drain plug. Let the oil drain for a while, til it just dripping out. Clean surface around the drain plug and replace the drain plug, DON"T OVER TIGHTEN the drain plug , if you have a torque wrench, use it. Move pan to under filter. Remove fliter cover, don't lose the spring (if it has one) or the O ring, unless your new filter comes with a new O ring, keep old O ring as a spare if you get a new one. Clean surface where the cover attaches to the engine. Install new filter with spring (if it has one), it should say which side is out and which is the engine side. Replace O ring if you have a new one, it doesn't hurt to reuse an O ring, and replace cover, don't over tighten cover bolts. Torquing them is good but you can do it without a torque wrench. Replace oil with chosen oil, big BIG BIG discussion on oil preference here occassionally. Don't over fill it. Add just a little less than is called for, start and let it run for a little while, say 30 seconds. Look for leaks during this time. Kill engine, but not with a bullet. Let it sit while, then check the oil, and add til its full.
You've changed the oil, you are now a certified mechanic. Take the time to clean your air filter too. Even if you get another air filter, keep your stock air filter as a backup. K&N is over hyped. They flow very well, but do not filter as well as other filters. Try a 'uni' or a 'twin air', they are good, and cheaper than a K&N. K&Ns are not bad filters, but in my opinion there are better filters out there. Somebody will disagree with me, but thats OK too. I've got a K&N in my truck. But not my quad.

Do the new rubicons Not have 2 drain plugs.
Do a search on rubicon / oil and have fun reading.
And may I suggest a K&N OILl filter. The flow rate is better. And ifyou understand these rubicon set ups you will see how a better oil flow is a good thing!! This is just my opinion nothing more. Oh for the sake of saving money, these things hold like 6 qrts. I have gotten a great deal from rocky mountain atv my last few oil changes. Just a suggestion. But you can either have a 50 dollar oil change or more from buying stuff from dealer or you can get it all off the internet for around 30 bucks.

I like to have the dealer perform first service on my quad. They will not only change the oil but usually replace the spark plug and adjust the valves. The reason I do this is because in case I run into any issues with the bike requiring warranty work, they can't argue that I didn't perform first service on the unit.

Anyone that has a rubicon do you know if they have any extra oil tanks or anything that you need to drain or is the engine all in the engine/oil pan...and any oil coolers that he will need to flush out also...K&n's are a pretty good airfilter for airflow and they don't need to be replaced you just spray them and let the cleaner sit and then spray it off then let it dry and put the oil onto the filter which you can get from the K&N recharge kit...I would recommend rejetting if you go with a K&N that way your air fuel mixture isn't off.
