Starting, idling when cold?
#1
When I start up when the engine is cold I have to keep bumping the throttle to keep it running. If it dies, it starts right back up. When it warms up completely, it idles fine on it's own at the right rpm. Is this normal? It's kinda annoying. It idles fine for about 15-20 seconds with the choke out. Then it wants to die no matter how the choke is set. Just wondering if anybody else has this issue and if I need to adjust the mixture screw?

It sound's like you have a dirty carburator, drain old gas from tank and there's a drain screw on the side of the carb, loosen the screw the gas will drain out of the carb bowl ! Then get some seafoam from auto zone, advance or o'reaillys auto parts store ; the cost is $4.99 plus tax in my area ( North GA. ) this is a fuel cleaner/stabilizer and work's great cleaning carburator's and the entire combustion system on any 2 or 4 stroke engine, and you might need to turn up the carburator idle speed screw it's on the right side of the carb .. And get a new spark plug if this doesn't fix the problem you may need to check the valve clearance they may be off spec.'s. try the seafoam and let us know if this is the fix , then we can go from there !!...................williebee

Nope, it's not a dirty carb. My Recon is a 2006 and I've had it 4-5 months and ride it almost every weekend. I checked the valve clearance at 20 hours per the manual. The spark plug is new and clean, gap is right and the idle is to spec when it warms up... 1400 plus or minus 100 rpm. I was thinking the idle mixture screw might be too lean or rich and would cause this. But I don't know for sure which it could be and don't want to mess with it if this is a pretty normal thing.

Both of my fishing buddies each bought a new left over stock 500 Foreman . The both of them have to fool around with the choke on cold start ups even in the summer. Even a old 91 200 2x4 Honda that comes with use needs the choke played with before it warms up enought and runs on its own. Just let them warm up until there happy, the trails not going anywhere so whats the hurry.

yeah my 2007 yfz450 does the exact same thing. have to press on the throttle a little to warm it up without stalling it. once you take it out for a lap the idling problem is fixed, and starts up fine.
