Yes you can, my first ATV was a 86' honda trx 350 foreman 4xd i used castrol gtx 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in summer ! my 2nd atv was a 93' suzuki 300 KQ 4wd my cousin bought the KQ new one week before the bizzard of 93' , all he ever used was castro gtx 20w50 winter and summer. After his death in 1998 i bought it from his youngest brother, and i've used castro gtx 10w40 summer and 20w50 winter ! I sold the honda to my youngest brother sept. 2005 for 2500.00 , then i bought a Arctic Cat 400 Auto Fis 4x4 feb. 7th 2006 ! I sold the KQ one week after i bought the AC to same brother for his wife to ride for 3500.00 ; they both still run as good as new. The first oil change on the Cat i changed to castro gtx 20w50 2nd change 3 week's ago to castro 10w40 and i haven't had one problem ! There are other brand's that will work as well, but castro has never let me down yet; but i'm sure there will be many other member's of these formum's who will have other brand's they like , so in the end it will be your call ! ..............williebee

Yes...you will get different recomendations here as to what oil to use. If you don't know this already, just make sure it doesn't say "Energy Conserving" in the round classification stamp on the back.
I won't tell you what I use in my atvs but after switching to synthetic oil, I can see no reason to switch to regular dino oil. I will say that my Rancher used the Honda oil and my g/f's Bruin used the Castrol oil it had in it. Neither use any oil as of now after switching to the synthetic.
For the record, I was running synthetic V twin oil in my Yamaha 650 motorcycle and when I had it serviced, the dealer put the Yamalube in the engine at the tune of 4.88 per quart and 11.99 for a filter. The bike seemed to shift better on the Yamalube at first but now shifts worse so I am going back to synthetic in the motorcycle.
It's your call as to what brand to use. You can go longer on the oil before changing with a synthetic. Just keep it changed on a regular basis and stay away from the energy conserving oils.

In a 300EX (assuming I lived in the frozen north), I would run 5W30 in winter and 10W40 in summer.
Here in the mild southwest, I run 10W40 in winter and 15W50 in summer.
After much study on the subject, Maxima Extra ester synthetic is the best oil I have found! They do not make Extra in 5W30, but if I lived where it was very cold, I might run their 0W30 Ultra.

I will say this at the risk of being flamed for my response, but for your location, a 0W-40 oil would suffice, year round. That is what I use in my atvs here in the deep south. I use Amsoil 0W-40 synthetic that is tailored for atv and snowmobile use. It's expensive but for my money, well worth the investment.
In no way do I recommend that you use the Amsoil or any other brand of synthetic. You can surf to this site:

and read the posts or better yet, join the forum and ask what is recommended. I studied long and hard before I made the switch to a synthetic.
Good luck in your decision.
