Test your compression. Could be rings?

Had the same thing happen with my 06 Recon. It would smoke bad engine braking down hill and really bad when I got back on the throttle. Are you getting black spooge out the tailpipe? Do you have smoke in the crankcase? When it is warmed up, shut the engine off, remove the oil dipstick... can you see smoke in there... turn the kill switch to off so it won't start up, bump the starter over and this will blow air out of the dipstick hole. If you got smoke in the crankcase, you have piston, rings, or cylinder problems.

compression test will tell you if your compression rings are bad, but will not tell you if your oil rings are bad, after compression test (checks ok) you can do a leak down test here are the instructions its not specific to atv's but itll do

Four out of five mechanics recomend that your Rancher give up the smoking.

I've got bad news for you. If you don't have your Rancher overfilled with oil you either have a guide-stem seal problem or you have ring problems.
If it bothers you that much, the engine needs to come down. And if the head comes off, you might as well do the rings while your at it.

My compression was to spec even though I had smoke and spooge out the tailpipe. The wrist pin clip came out and gouged up the cylinder wall and eventually the rings seized in the piston and it was all down hill from there. I would say you need to go ahead and pull the cylinder to see what's going on.

Mine was 3 months old with 15 hours.

This should absolutely NOT be happening yet. $hit happens.

I got the factory manual and did the work myself for under $300. New piston, rings, cylinder and gaskets. Yes, I was still under warranty, but I believe if you want something done right these days, do it yourself. It's not very difficult if you are moderately good with a wrench. The manual will show you how to do it so you can see if it's something you feel comfortable doing yourself.
