rubicon 01 500, took off the front skid plate, then drained both plugs, right next to the front drain there was a big bolt that looks like its holding a cover that would fit the replacement oil filter i have, well i took it out and now i'm not so sure i got the right bolt now, more oil came out and the "big bolt" that came out was hollow and had holes thru it and a spring (?) inside..... theres a cover and it still looks like it can fit but i couldn't get it off, didn't wanna yank and break more then i already have...... i have a digi cam i can take pics if my description is sketchy..... THANKS!

I'm kinda confused. How did you get the spring out without the filter? But that is the cover you want. It should be a little bit bigger than your filter. Its round and has a circular raised center. It should just pop right off. You may have to pry a LITTLE bit but becareful not to beat the crap out of it. The big bolt is the bolt that the oil flows through and the spring holds the filter in tight. So relax your there.

what i would do without u guys I have NO idea. Thank you very much, the more i thought about it after i posted it made sense for the holes and how it prob dispersed the oil over the filter evenly, also I looked at the filter and that bolt looked like it would fit in the center of it real sexy like, but now its confirmed thanks again!

The cover is going to have to come off because underneath it is where you oil filter cartridge is located. I am sure it is just stuck because of the large o ring. Try going around the edge of the COVER, OIL FILTER with a small screw driver to pry it gently off.

Don't forget about the washer that goes between the sping and the filter. About 1/4 of the oil changes I do at the shop, the washer is missing because it sticks to the filter and people don't realize its there and throw it away w/ the filter. If yours is missing, replace it, the Honda part number is 15414-300-000.
