My question is... Is there always a benefit to running race fuel, that is for making more power... I have a 05 450r HRC Cam FMF Exhaust K&N ESR Air Box Removal and jetted.... I have been thinking about running race fuel instead of the usual 92 octane stuff I run but wonder if it will make a difference... Love the input if anyone can help, also what are the benefits and consequences of race fuel.

 

if your compression is stock then no need to run it.. it might help some. but not worth the cash for the 110 low lead. or you can go to the air port and get 103 low lead. that's not to bad..
and the higher in elevation you go the less you need higher octane, all the higher octane does is help it from pinging. so say you advanced your timing then you could use a higher octane fuel. but on a stock compression engine you don't really need it.

If you have stock compression and want some more power, useing race gas is not the way to do it. If you want a bit more power, buy yourself a 5 gal can of methanol and put in 10% to regular fuel..............shake, shake shake and put it in your tank. You "might" have to rejet with this mix.

 

Detonation on these high strung engines will be devastating, so I always go a LITTLE over whatever octane the manufacturer recommends, just as a hedge against ever having any detonation. But going way over is a waste, and your quad might even run worse.

Back in the day, I use to run a 5:1 mix of pump gas to race gas. I know there are those who say pump and race gas won't mix, but I think that is just an old wives tale. But I never ever ran straight race gas.

What I do now is run a little Klotz Octane booster in my 92 pump gas. Even better than the bit of octane boost, is the fact that it contains an ester synthetic lubricant for the top end (like a 2-stroke), and a fuel preservative.

 

So does the 05 450 (stock) require a higher octane then the lowest unleaded which is what? 87 or 89? If this is all I had (lowest octane), what would be a good octane boost, and amount to use in 5 gallons?

 

91 octane for an 05r is more then enough. Doesn't matter what cams or pipes. Compression is what octane is about. Booster is a waste also.. For those that don't know you will lose one point of compression for every 3000ft in elevation. I run 12.5-1 in my Dale and am at 5000ft so really my compression is about11-1. We can get away w/ 13-1 w/ 91 because we can factor in the elevation loss..
