first thing is try a new plug. I'm not sure why the quad would be fine then suddenly running really lean, but it could considering the choke richens the mixture, so try adjusting the idle mixture.

Thanks jonnyboy5662 I tried a plug from another machine ,but no change, the electrode is light brown in colour, I think that is o/k. Where is the adjustment to richen the mixture?.

I assume you're talking about the rancher... I looked at a diagram of the carb online and it looks to be in on the bottom between the float bowl and the cylinder head. It's a small (brass I think) screw. Not sure what the stock setting is on that one. Screw it in and count how many turns it takes to reach the seated possition, remember this number in case this isnt the problem. Try adjusting it from there a quarter turn at a time. Warm the bike up first if you can with the choke on like you normally do before you do this.
Good luck

If it runs with the choke on then that tells me that it isn't getting enough gas. Lets start with the screen in the petcock. Clean that. Change or install an inline filter if possible. Clean your carb and see if it runs right then.
