400ex or 450r? need advice
ok, I'm 16 and weigh 160 and 5' 11".. my first 4wheeler was a suzuki eiger 400, I thought it was a good quad but as soon as i wrecked it into the back of someone else going 5 mph and it caused $800 damage I rode someone's 250ex that they were selling and I was instantly hooked. I ended up buying it (great quad, easy and simple to ride, got it for $1800 from someone who just wanted to get rid of them) but I definitely need more power, I ride that 250ex like theres no tomorrow.
The 07 trx450r is a beast and I really like the black plastics with red flames and a red frame, but it doesn't have reverse and thats something I almost have to have, I use it all the time.. then on top of that, my friend said something about it being so powerful that the front end is hard to keep on the ground to a point where its not fun, and he said its impossible to ride with a passenger. plus, some people I talked to say that they are too high maintenance for someone to ride casually, as I'm used to only changing the oil in the 250ex every 1 1/2 months and that's it. I don't know if this is all true but another question, is there a reverse kit or something you can buy for it?
right now I'm leaning toward the 400ex because it has reverse, it costs $1000+ less and the friend who said the 450r is too powerful/not fun said that the 400ex is more fun, but he does weigh 210 lbs and I weigh 160.. someone else said that the 400ex is lower maintenance and will hold up better for casual riding. I don't know if this is all true or not, but I'm buying a new quad sometime before christmas, and I'd like to clear some stuff up so I don't get stuck with something I don't want
thanks a lot guys! I appreciate it

I just got a 450r in august and love the quad to death...I am about 160 and am 6'1"...The 450r has alot more maintanance then a 400ex would have def as it is a race engine and thats pretty much what the bikes were built to do is race...they have alot more compression and power then a 400ex but the 400ex has proven itself over time to be very bulletproof no matter how badly you abuse the machine...It sounds to me like you would be better off with a 400ex or a suzuki z400 since you want reverse...coming from a ds650 I am used to pushing a heavy machine to go in reverse which I don't really need to do often so the 450r is no prob pushing...but I would go with the 400ex or z400 in your case...good luck

well im 13 and i have the 400EX, its a good bike, a little more reliable then the 450, they mostly use the 450's to race, you should get the 400 and put an fmf ppe on it, its a good bike (with reverse) and its jest the right sixe for me, well my exparience enyway, the 450 is good, but jest a little to big for someone lke you, ake my advice on this one the 400ec wont do you rong!!!!!

""so powerful that the front end is hard to keep on the ground to a point where its not fun,""""
Thats some funny s#$% how can that not be fun... If I were you go with the 400ex... the 450r will take ten times the maint, if you dont stay up on it, it wont last long and will cost you a fortune... Good luck with your choice, but with your exp level and size the 400ex will be perfect.

Hey, lived in Morgantown up until I was in Jr High school!
I pick the 400EX for tighter trail riding. It has an engine that will lug down and doesn't mind being ridden slowly.
I pick the 450R for the open desert, and faster open trails. It has an engine that likes to rev, and it is geared high, so it doesn't like going slow at all.
Take a look at the Z400 as well. I fing that it lands somewhere between the EX and the R.

Go with the 400ex, I just picked mine up & rode it for the first time yesterday, more than enough power for trails and I used reverse 3 times yesterday while my mate had to get off his predator to turn it around.haha. It doesn't take much to lift the front wheels either, but it's not scary its a lotta fun and totally controllable.

by the way do any of you know how they get 6-speed transmissions in the 400's and 450's? from what I understand they come with 5-speed stock, but I test-rode someone's 400ex and it had 6 gears, another person's 450 i saw had 7 gears, how would I go about getting something like that? because I do like going really fast..
..reminds me of this one time when I took my friend's bombardier outlander 800 for a 50 mile spin on paved roads going like 80-90mph the whole time, that was unexplainably fun..
