Default Changes of a 400EX ?

Just wondering what the changes of the 400EX are ? Heck, I don't even know when they started making the 400 EX . Is all the stuff cosmetic or what are the changes and improvements to look for ? I am thinking of buying a used one as long as it will bring the front end off the ground. Will a 400 ex bring the front end up in a wheely all day long ?
How about a good trail machine ? Is it a good trail machine ?
Thanks,
D.

One of the wheelie kings (!), and along with its brother the 300EX absolutely the best trail quads of all time!

They first came out as a 99 model. I have an 00 that is high mileage, and all I have ever had to do to it is replace the rear axle bearings. Motor is still going strong!

A couple of years ago they changed the body style (to match the 450R), and added reverse.
