I'm pretty new to quads in general and i was wondering something today. How do you know if the quad is overheating? On cars you have lights/gauges that tell you when it's getting too hot, and on liquid cooled engines you may have some type of steaming/boil over from the coolant but how do you know when an air cooled motor is too hot? Will it just run really bad? Or do you just wait until you warp the head to find out that you overheated it...LOL

good question, air cooled engines dont usally overheat if your quad is moveing, but once I got my big red hot and ate the pistion pin to rod berring when pulling 1,000 pounds of gravel in doubble traillers up a 3 mile long hill (had to put 2 sacks of 90lb cement on the rear rack for traction) on a logging road to our bear stand at 5MPH in second gear low range. The best thing to do is run 100% snythtic oil and try to keep moveing If your ankle isnt burned your good to go!

 

You answered my question so I will answer yours. I agree with JRM,4 stroke aircooled atvs will usually not overheat.The best thing for you to do is run with good oil and ride for about 31/2 hours and let it cool down for about 45 minutes just to be safe.
