400 ex mechanical question

Wondering if this has happened to anyone. Riding along and it just flat out dies, like it ran out of gas. But it wasn't out of gas. Hit the start button again, and whirling noise only. Pulled out the Chilton and it says to check the starter motor, did that , it appears fine and it turns and all, also it said to check the starter clutch. I have yet to do that yet. Before I opened it up, I wanted to check here and see if anyone has had this happen to them and maybe it is something more simple????

sounds like 2 problems.
one you got a starter problem.
and 2 something makes your bike stall out i think they are sepeate problems.
i had a bike that used to stall like that and it was the CDI box.
i dont know what is wrong with your bike, i am just throwing in my 2 cents.

If you can give a little more info on the problem I may be able to help you solve it but how long after riding will it begin to do this and will it start back up? How old is the 400 ex and any mods that you currently have done? are you sure you have gas and make sure that the gas is on at the fuel petcock...let me know any I will be glad to help

Also the starter would be bad if you had trouble starting the quad in the first place but it seems like it starts fine...the starter clutch has the stator and flywheel and magneto this will help your quad recharge itself like how an alternator works on a car...from the info that you gave me so far (not knowing if you are getting spark and that the rectifier is working you will need to let me know) where does the noise seem to be coming from in the engine and will the bike start back up if you popstart it.

I guess I worded the problem wrong. It has gas, this is the first time it has done it, it will not at all try to turn the motor over, it just makes a whirrling noise, the noise is the starter motor, I do know that. Just by visual when I had the starter motor off, the teeth on gears were fine and it does turn the flywheel.

If it just had a bad starter, it should still push start. But seeing it died while riding, you probably have some other problem going on.
I am guessing that your engine died, and in your vigor to get it restarted, you overworked the starter and now you have two problems (?????).

No vigor, when it quit, I opened gas tank, checked gas, then pushed starter button again, whirlling noise. Loaded it up and took it home, that is all it does is whirl the starter.
Anyone know about the starter clutch???? Broken timing chain, good possiblity.

I would check a few things now thatd I have a clearer picture of what is happening...I would check to see if have it in nuetral and try starting it by popstarting ti just for the heck of it...I would take the side case off and check to see if the sprag clutch is alright(flywheel, stator magneto) and make sure that the starter is engaging fully which I believe you said was...Check the timing chain and make sure the tensioner is keeping the chain tight...then if none of that works let me know
