Default 2005 Recon Cuts Out In Water

I bought a 2005 Recon ES over the summer. I have taken it through water 2-3 times now. Everytime I go into water though it dies. First time I went into the water I was not sure what was wrong. I went over my footpegs. I killed it in the water luckily I got it to start back up had to keep the REV's up and was able to get out. The last time I remember I was riding and found a creek not hardly deep and the trail goes through it so I was going through got halfway and it died on me. I got it to start back up pulled back and had to get speed to run through it. The water was not even at my footpegs yet when it died.

Is this because of a plug low on the frame thats getting water in it? I am not sure were the coil is the motor I don't know if thats getting wet? If its a plug I know I should be able to put some delectrical grease on it and it should be good to go in water. Just not sure if thats it or if its something else. I like going through water, but it sucks when it cuts out. Its easier to start when I hold the gas and fire it when I die in the water. As long as the REV's are up it will stay running.

Judging by your descripting of the problem, and having to keep the revs up or it will stall, it does sound like the tell-tale sign of sucking water into the engine. That does seem odd because those things are usually very water friendly. Have you released the drain on your airbox and let water from your last run drain out? Next time it happens pop off your airbox cover and see if anything's wet in there. Perhaps your snorkel is not sealing properly where it goes into your airbox, allowing water in when it shouldn't.

Its called steam. When you get into water the steam from the engine rises and goes straight into your factory snorkel. Then it dies. Also there is a vent line on your carb. This is very easy to route up to the handlebars. I'll bet money if you extended this line up to the handlebar area this would solve your problem. Its very simple to do. First find the vent line it will be running down to the bottom of your quad. Look at the size and go to the auto parts store or a Lowes.Get about 2 foot of this size hose. Then you just route it up to your handlebars. I say handlebars because its the highest point.

Almost forgot. If you do ride in some water get some dialectric grease and atleast put in your sparkplug boot. This will help keep water out of your plug.

The water isn't even close to my airbox. That would not make sense. It cuts out when the water is barly touching my footpegs the carb is like another foot above that. My snurkle on it is located by the tank. I don't really see water getting into it. I have looked at it before and the water drain never has water in it. I even got almost up to my seat in water and no water was in the water box. I had to winch myself out because she wouldn't start back up. I got out of the water fired right away. The last time I went into the water I didn't see any team rolling off of the motor. My filter in my airbox is hovered above the box so water if any was in it would take a fair amount to get into the carb.

The vent line will fix this problem. Think about it, if something was getting wet it would still be wet on the restart. And would probably run rough until it dried.

Had a similar problem with a Bayou, it turned out to be the hose/snorkel from the carb to the air box was not fully seated on the carb thus letting steam in and chocking the carb. Just my 2 cents double check the hose/snorkel from the carb to the air box.

I probably won't mess with my 4 wheeler till this weekend when I change the oil. I will look at it then and see if I think any of the ideas will work and check the vent and airfilter stuff. Its going to rain over the weekend so I might not be able to test out if it works or not. I may if we get a break though I know the perfect place to test it.
