400ex will be awsome for you, your type of riding is just what it was built for. it is geared perfect for trails, u can idle in first for teh slow portions and it has lots of low end power to lift up the front end. down fall is no reverse, but ya realy don't need it, its so light and prepy u can throw the rear end around with no problem

i feel that the stock shocks do just find out on the track, double ups, table top no problem, i do have friends thow that perferd to put aftermarket, but they are way to much money for my taste and the stock ones served me well. i have no complaints.

and riding in the feilds, awsome!!!!!! thats where 75% of my riding is done, its a wheelie monster so have fun.

k&n filter, jets, and a pipe are well worth the money for a more power.

keep us posted

I am also a 400ex rider and I just bought mine used from a friend back in November. It is a 2001 model and I love it so far. My 400ex actually came with 2 sprockets. The one that I have on there now gives me alot more torq for climbing hills, but if I were riding on flat ground I would probably go to the other sprocket to give me more top end.

I really like my 400. I would have to disagree with some of Bowz's statements though. (for me anyways) I found the gearing to be to tall for our trails. I droped a tooth on the front and found a whole new machine!! With my mods, it pulls hard and still has a decent top end. I haven't seen many trails where you could run 5 gear wide open anyways. On the track, it gets out of corners alot better. The front shocks would be its down fall. After awhile of mx abuse, they get hot and fade badly. Now I'm not a tall guy, but I am wide and that my have alot to do with the shocks. I have draged raced a couple of friends with their 450's and my 400 stays right with them until the top of 4th and then they start to pull away. On the track, I can stay with them until the front end starts to bottom out. (the hot front shock problem) I believe if I had some Elka's , it would be an almost perfect quad. Wish them things were alot cheaper!!

Along with its little brother the 300EX, it's the best trail quads of all time. Reverse got added in (I think) 05, so look for that if you feel you need it. A few simple mods like opening up the airbox and an aftermarket exhaust will really help the power.

I'm not a track rider so I won't comment on that, but if I am jumping I prefer to be on the 400.

The 400ex is the best trail bike i think ever made. You can drop it in 1st gear and just putt along through the woods. Very good atv. Most needed mods i think are exhaust and a new front sproket 1 tooth more than stock is what i use.

I used to ride a little MX with my old (2001) 400ex and it will handle descent size doubles just fine as long as you land right. It looks like you just want a good all around machine and the 400ex is one of them.

BTW, I see you have a 450R, what's the reasoning for the 400ex? Just curious...
