Looking at a 400ex
#1
I am going to take a look at a 2002 400ex. I have seen pics of it and it looks like it is in great condition. What should I all look for when making sure that it is alright to buy and in good condition. Anyone have any suggestions or pointers? Please help...thanks

Shocks! A machine that old probably has had the shocks pretty well thrashed.
Frame cracks. The EX isn't prone to cracking at all, but still this is something you should always check for. Look for lines of rust that will indicate their location.

Other than looking out for what has already been mentioned, look around at prices in your area. 400ex's don't hold there value to well with all the newer quads out, so you can get them for a very good price.

Clean and stock XR400s and 400EXs are holding their values extremely well. Many highly modified and clapped out 440s are out there for low prices but the reliable clean stockers are highly desirable and hard to find.

My wife's '05 400ex is still in new condition and all stock, I'd be lucky to get much over 3k out of it.
With everyone wanting the "latest tech.", the EX's just don't sell like they did 3-4 years ago. Plus they are a dime a dozen. Therefor, the calue is way down.
