uh oh....you got me worried now...i hope its just soemthing little which it prob is...is the jetting correct? the piston should have given it allot more get up and go....i really dont know what to say other than check the jetting, that had allot to do with my 330ex's performance when i first had it built, they didnt jet it right and it didnt feel like it was as fast as a recon,haha...hope you get it straight, keep in touch

If your only change was the 416 kit, slightly increasing displacement and compression ratio, it oughta run stronger without other adjustments, if put together right. If you changed exhaust, you may have a jetting problem . . .

deffinatly jetting problem. When I put a bunch of cash into my old' 300ex, I had it jetted inproperly and it actully felt like it was "slower" when i got on it. When you rejet, you will fly!

looks like i may need a pilot.

I haev a DJ 170, no airbox lid, Uni, and it it rich, but if i lower the main jet size, then less gas would be entering the combustion chamber, so to me that means less power.

I have been messing around with a few things lately
-disks
-jeting
-intake
and i think that i may need a pilot jet, anyways. as soon as i get it jetted correctly i'll tell you what's up...

The notion, "the more gas, the more power," ain't necessarily so. You want an optimum MIXTURE, neither too rich nor too lean--one that give you a nice coffee-with-cream color when you read your plug. Anything else and you rob yourself of power.

ok i cannot jet it correctly because i keep getting this dry black plug reading!!

i am burning a little bit of oil, but i just got everything back together, so i figured this was normal. i am not running it hard, and during the first few hours i barely hit the throttle! (not consecutively, every other 10 min i'd ride, then it set overnight.

how long should it smoke after the rebuild? it is not constantly smoking, but at a blurp of the throttle around 1/2 throttle i get a small puff of white smoke. then when i rev past that i get a puff of purple smoke. This is not a constant smoke, just when i hit the trottle. I looked under troubleshooting and it says stuff avout worn rings and crank case pressure. I cleared out my crank case breather hose (nothing was in it to begin with) and i still have the same setup. Dry black plug all the time, with some smoke. It also BOGGS ON THE MID-TOP END!!!!!! it is about 45=50 degrees with wet rainy, muddy conditions. someone tell me what's going on here, thx.

think i'd have these kind of problems with an R?

I just got my 440 back from the engine builder today. Haven't ridden it yet for the weather is way to bad. When I was warming it up and blipping it a time or two I also noticed a puff of black smoke. The builder told me that it was normal and that all bigger bored 416, 426, and 440's will puff the black stuff abit. If in fact this is out of the norm I'd like to hear more about it.

'99 440 12:1, NEW hardened rockers, 450/451 grind cam, port job, XR250 cdi, 162 main, 45 pilot, stock air filter, lid on snorkle removed, WB R4, 16 tooth counter.

That is out of the norm. Black smoke is rich no matter what the bore size.

What altitude are you at? I have a 425 w/ track cam at 500 ft. sea level and I am running a 155 main and a 40 pilot jet. 170 is way to big. It will bog out bad when you open it up and paint plugs black as coal.
