I"m looking in to buying either a 250R or 300ex. But i need to know which one would be better for me. I normally ride in the woods, in open fields, and do some jumping. The reason i considered those too is that i'm gonna buy it used to i can get it cheap. I don't want to spend that much money on the quad. Maybe 2000 to 2500 dollars. If i get the 300ex, i'm gonna install a 330kit. Or is there something else i could do to get the most power out of it. The only reason it's not a straigh up choice of the r, is because i don't want to have to spend the money to rebuild the engine every year(too much money). SO which one would be best?

I had a 300ex.I traded it even for a 250r.I ride in woods(mountains) most of the time.I want the r to hillclimb with. The 300ex was a struggle sometimes to get up a step long hill. The 250r is longer and has that famous 2 stroke ripp.If you follow your buddies 400ex into the woods on a 300ex ,you'll be looking for a way around the hill he just went up . I liked them both ,but I like the 250r best....

If you say that you are gonna go with a 330 kit for it then I would say go with the 300EX. With the 330 kit installed, it will have to power to outdue 250Rs in the woods because of their 2-stroke powerband. I ride in about the same type of places that you do and my stock 300 loves it. Also, I'm not sure about this, but with the 330EX, i think you still have reverse. So If you get into a corner a little too hot, you can use the reverse instead of picking it up and pulling it backwards. Just my opinion, though. the choice is up to you. Either way you go, either Honda won't lead you astray.

All Honda quads are nice. But Honda doesnt make a high performance quad anymore. Only watered down ones. My friend rides a 300ex, a nice, fun to ride quad, but he rode my atc250r and really liked the nitrogen monoshock, soft ride and fast speed. Which new quads dont have. The only way to get a new quad to be high performance is to spend lots of money on aftermarket parts.

It's really not much of a comparison, the R can go anywhere a 300 will, it'll just do it a whole lot faster.
You can pipe and tune an R for bottom-end (as mine is) and ride trails, etc.
Who told you that you would have to rebuild the engine every year? What BS. Depending on who builds it and how, and how you take care of it, you won't have to. I've seen R's go for over 6 years without even a top-end. Mine has over 4 years and runs great. Any half-a$$ mechanic can do a fresh top-end for less than $150! That isn't much even if you do it every year.
You can put a 330 in and still not catch an R.
I've had both, and I'll never go back to a 300.

I would definatly go with the 300EX.The places you said you will be riding is what the EX was made for.If you are a little tight with money then dont get the R.They are high maintinence and made more for the open.

you say you do not want to rebuild the R every year because its too much money..rebuilds cost me around 100 bux..piston, rings, and gaskets...you also say you are going to put a 330 in that 300EX...be prepared to rebuild that also. I had a buddy that has had 2 different 330's now, the first one the counterbalancer went through the case..the 2nd one the rod bearing went out...I say in the long run you'd be much happier with a 250R.

250R. No doubt about it. I used to have a 300. They are fun for driving around in 1st or 2nd gear, but anything more than that and they have no snap. Pipe the 250R and nobody will catch you. You will have a blast riding it. I have also ridden a 435cc Yamaha Warrior, it also doesn't have much above 3rd gear. The 250R has tons of power everywhere.
