250x or 300ex
#1
I know that a 250x and 300ex are basically the same machine except the 250x with 50 or so less cc's and a kick start. I have a choice of getting either both in about the same shape for around the same price except the 250x about 500$ cheaper.
I was just wondering what u guys think I should get. I ride mostly in trails and snow in Illinois and some straight line back roads. Thanks alot.

Both are vey solid machines. The 250X is slightly lighter and There isnt really a 50cc difference. The 250X is 246cc where the 300EX is 282 so the real difference is only 36cc. I've ridden both and i bought the 250X because almost every part on it is interchangeable with the 300 and it was cheaper. Just my 2 cents. Dave

well i have owned both an 87 250x a 94 300ex and a 2000 300ex
none of them gave me any troubles execpt the 250x smoked on start up.
well. What to look at on a 250x they are from 13 to 9 years old. That is a lot of hours on a motor.
Mainly when you find them, the shocks are gone, they smoke and need a top end rebuild. Bearings are going bad. Unless you luck out and find one with barely any hours on it. I'm not saying it can't be done. Or you could find one that has been tooled on with a new topend ect..
i just think you'd be better off to get a 97 and up 300ex.
my 250x had a cobra pipe and K&N filter. My stock 00 300ex toasted it in a 100 yard drag. From start to finish. in 5 races i won 4. stock tires to 20" Turftamers.
I'm not saying they are a bad quad. But when you look at the years. It just scares me.
Me i'd rather put out another grand and get myself a newer 300ex.
i don't think a pipe is going to give you the same amount of horses. Another way to think of it is. Put a pipe on a 300ex and you get more power than a 250x piped.
Batterty problems. It was 14 out last night{has been colder), i went out popped the starter button once and it fired right up. My batterty wasn't low at all
Just my 2 cents take it as you want it

TAKE MY ADVISE AND GET THE 300EX. I HAVE ONE OF MY OWN AND THINK IT'S GREAT. MY FREIND HAS A 250X AND I RODE IT AND FOUND OUT THAT IT LACKS SO MUCH OF THE LOW END THAT THE 300EX HAS. PLUS I RACED HIM AND FOUND OUT MY 300EX WAS EXTREAMLY FASTER ON BOTTOM AND TOP END.
