Default Changing the Oil

Greetings!

I have an 05 Foreman and an 06 Rancher (both 2wd). I am tired of paying my dealer $165 for routine services.

Would somebody be willing to walk me through changing the oil? It looks pretty straight forward but I would rather have someone who knows how tell me so I don't screw anything up. Also, what oil would you recommend? And finally, any other maintenance tips I should be aware of?

THANKS!

First off, you need to read your owner's manual! Somehow, I really can't believe you would be asking this if you had already read it. And even better, get yourself service manuals for your machines!!!

The manuals have a maintenance schedule, and detailed info about routine procedures like changing oil, etc. It even has pictures (like where the drain bolts are and the oil filter, etc.), and explains it better than any of us can explain it here in words! Read it first, and if you then still have questions, come back and ask us. Otherwise, you are wasting your own time and ours.......

Some good basic oil info.: http://www.thumperfaq.com/oil.htm

As for oil, pick a motorcycle specific oil that is rated API SG/JASO MA (just like your owner's manual says!), and you can't go far wrong. Beyond that, the synthetics have advantages over plain old petroleum oils, and the ester synthetics have advantages over the other two types of synthetics. I WVa, I would run a 10W40 in summer, and 5W30 in winter. My personal preference is Maxima Extra, an ester synthetic.

(If you can't figure out what oil to run, just get some Honda HP4 (without moly) from your dealer.)

Besides keeping the air filter cleanded and oiled, changing the engine oil and oil filter is your most important and frequent maintenance procedure. You will want to change the oil in your rear dirve gear cases also (takes 80W90 GL5 "hypoid" gear oil).

Besides that, it is very very important to keep up on your valve adjustments! This is one thing that probably should be done by the dealer. And, occasionally change out the spark plug and adjust your clutch.
