what kind of oil?
well, the 400ex shares the oil with the transmission and has a 'wet' type clutch, meaning the clutch is in the oil. So you need a "motorcycle" type oil, regular car oil is formulated for pistons and a crankshaft only, car engines do not contain a gear transmission or a clutch. Honda's GN-4 is a regular petroleum oil that will work well for this, Amsoil, Mobil 1 and better yet, Maxima makes high-quality synthetics for motorcycles as well, but the pricetag is higher (amsoil at the local auto parts store is about the same price as honda's GN4 at a dealer, it's a no-brainer..)
just make sure you use a motorcycle oil that has an API SG rating and also meets JASO MA certification (not MB) the MA certification means it's safe for use in an engine/transmission with a wet clutch. You could get by with car oil in a pinch (if you had a leak and the ONLY thing you had was car oil to get you home) obviously some oil is better than no oil at all, but avoid this if at all possible, and change it out asap if you do. 10w40 weight should be ok, consult a manual to be sure.
reconranger is usually quite prompt about posting replies to oil related questions, i hold his info in high regards. I think he's a biochemist too, so he knows his stuff.
