Default 1986 TRX250 Fourtrax

Hey everyone,
I just bought a 86 TRX250 Fourtrax that starts and runs great. Only thing is it has a ticking noise from low in the case. Thought it might be something knocking around in the left side of the case and it turned out 1) The starter teeth crapped out and are slowly eating the stator (at least it still works) and my main concern... 2) The balance shaft bearing on the left side has slid to the inside and is no longer supported by the case.

What can cause this and anyone know of an easy way to fix this? Anyone know "cheap" places to find parts, and while I am contemplating what to do about this, What other engines will bolt into this frame, etc with out modification (or only minor mods). I may just try and find a replacement even though this one runs good and has good power.

Thanks!

No one?

I figured someone would at least know of a few engines that are interchangeable, I was thinking maybe the 350 engines from that time period might work as well.

Has anyone ever seen the balance shaft "shift" like that?

As for interchangeability I believe all engine from the honda "X" quads will work, with a few mods in some cases. The only real question is how much do you want to spend (time and money, cause that's all it ever takes!)?

The time and money is exactly it. The reason I was looking for interchangeability is because I am wondering if I can find either a junkyard or ebay motor for cheap to use. I am thinking about just using it like it is and hope it holds out.

your one way bearing sounds like it is shot. do you hear a sound coming from the motor when you shut it off. some thing spinning and then a clunk. if it dose that is what broke the starter gears it is on the clutch side. the part is $100- or +bucks. you can get the gears off e-bay cheap. you can use a 250 motor out of a 1985-1987 bigred,sx,3 wheeler and fourtrax if you want to go that way.thay bolt right in no mods.if you want more info on the one way bearing just ask.

Thanks, I did manage to figure out the starter problem. The other problem though I am not too sure about. The balance shaft that has shifted sideways and had the left side bearing on this shaft "fall" out of the support in the case. I think I might just leave it and ride it until it dies. If it last long enough I may split the case later this year after the racing season. (I bought it to tow a Dragbike around) Only thing is I can handle the engine part, but I can never seem to get the transmission back together on my own. Do the Clymer manuals have detailed directions and/or pictures for this? I hate it when I find "hidden" problems after buying something. Oh well, I guess you get what you pay for.....lol
