Blew the tranny in 05 rancher
#1
Ok guys, new here. Ive had my 05 2wd rancher since it was new. A couple of months ago I noticed sometimes when I shift down a gear it goes into neutral instead of the next gear down and it would make a whining sound until i clicked down another gear and then it would go into gear. Never had any problems upshifting though . It scared me but it only did it every once in a while. Had a big ride last week and I downshifted from 5-4 and it locked the engine/tranny up and I slid a good ways on gravel. When I hit the start button the starter and battery try to hit but everythings locked up. On the right side on the top of the tranny case where the side of the block bolts on a chunk of the casing was knocked out. I got it into neutral and it will roll freely but its evident I need a new tranny. I was wondering where the best places are to look? I really dont wanna drop the money for a new one from the stealership. Thanks

you need a complete engine assy. the part that is missing appears to be above the camshaft, it looks like the camshaft inside there, and that rod is a pushrod. It probably blew here cuz a pushrod blew off when the engine came to a halt so fast. chances are there are many other things broken now inside the engine so it's not worth the trouble trying to repair it, other than replacing the whole engine. I have seen a few used ones on ebay, complete assemblies from crashed machines. I think you can put anything in back to 2002 or 2003, should bolt right in, honda didnt make too many (if any at all) changes to the 350 rancher in those years other than frame and plastic's.

Thanks, Im gonna have to go for a whole engine/tranny. Took it to one of my friends that does that work and he said the crank was snapped in 2 places. Said the pin in 2nd gear fell out and pretty much "threw a wrench in the gears". He said the oil had water but I have Not sunk it, maybe through the pull starter? We trail ride pretty hard, the occasional mud puddle, and its not hard to get it stuck though it does have 25x11 mudlites. I do ride pretty hard but not hard enough to do something such as that... thanks for the help
