Default 400ex 440 big bore

i have a 400ex and im the slowest of the pack. ive never had any probs with the bike ever! but everyone has 450s 660s or banshees. i want the big bore. i want to get the 440 with a slight port job. what other aftermarket parts do i need to accomodate the big bore kit. can you just jet the carb and be good? i still want performance parts as well. please dont leave anything out. thanks guys randall

Welcome to the forums randall. From the word around here the 440 kit blows head gaskets like none other. To keep from having to deal with that I'd suggest the 426 bore. If you don't have an exhaust get one and jet the carb accordingly. Removing your airbox lid will gain you close to the same power as the exhaust. Then drop in a Hotcam and you should be pushing close to 40hp.

Keep in mind that this will help you stay up but, you are still on a 400ex and not a 450. No matter what you do you are not on par with a 450.

I did the 440 deal on my older 400ex, it did perform better, but wasn't worth it to me. If you really need more power, it would be better just to get a upgraded machine.

Also, what type of riding do you do? In wooded trails a 400ex should keep up with anything out there.

i appreciate you taking the time to help me. can i still do the port job with the 426? what stage cam 1 or 2? i heard with the stage 2 you need to change the springs and valves and stuff. if the top end is off may as well change it huh? my buddy has got a bone stock z400 and i am so close to beating him but i cant. i want this to put me over the top!

yes you can still port and polish. Hotcams says they do not require hardened rockers and new springs but a lot of people recommend it. Hotcams also says that stage 2 is for big bore 440. I'd stick with the stage 1. You should gain a big hit in the mid range and some upper. stage 2 is mostly upper range power for cross country racing and what not.

I don't think it matters. I'd do the bore first. It will probably show you the biggest gain. If you plan to go with a cam you'll need a higher compression piston like 11:1. Anything above the 12.5:1 area and you'll have to run race gas.

Just remember your putting alot of money into this thing. Your taking a chance of being disappointed and wishing that you sold it and used the money to get a 450. I almost started the process your doing and forced myself to hold off a couple of months. I found a good deal on a yfz450 and picked it up. Theres no way i could get the power out of that 400ex that i'm getting out of this beast.

im just so comfortable on the bike i think its a good all around bike. at world class cycle they are giving me the piston etc. rev box, cam and gaskets for 269.99. i have a guy at my local shop that is going to put it back together for me atleast help me with it. i just have to find a local machinist hopefully an old tymer thats going to bore and port for a decent price. i can prob only get like 2500 for the bike anyway may as well hold on to it. i dont want a monthly note.

400ex's are bulletproof and the best trail quad you can get. When I use to ride lots of trails and i wouldn't of traded that ex for the world. If you are sure you wanna keep that EX (and you sound like you are) than go for it. You won't be disappointed at all if its what you want. That sounds like you got good prices. Just be sure its a high compression piston (probably is most are) or it won't make much difference and a cam will be out of the question.
Good luck and have fun with it.
