swamped 4wheeler
#1
I swamped my 4wheeler in a small stream/river and got it rolled over and pulled it out and wife pulled me back to truck. after home I drained the airbox, carburator and oil. oil was milky. changed it 3-5 times. put new filter in and oil. on the sixth time started it and ran for a minute. checked the oil and it was ok. Went to the store and was heading home and started making noise. I shut it off right away. pulled it home again drained the oil. Milky again, but not bad. Did I screw up my motor? what should I do and what should I check for?
thanks for your help. Its a 98 450s. THanks and godbless. joe

Ya it will look milkly after you rode it just idleing won't get the oil through all the parts in the motor. Far as the noise in your motor now it's hard to listen to it on here. I would say that you probley scored the piston. Does it smoke now? Put it in gear and hold the brakes and rev it up slowly does the noise go away or get loader? If it gets loader it the crank.

Yes, you have screwed your engine up.
You will require a full rebuild, odds are against it have destroyed the crank, however there could be major head damage. You dont mention what ATV you have, but a lot of them dont have cam bearings, if its an overhead cam.
When an engine is swampped it really needs to have the engine dis-assembled to clean it properly, otherwise you risk exactly what happened to you.

No, i dont think you screwed it up. This is what i would do.
(1) Drain the airbox
(2) Drain the carb till it was raw gas coming out
(3) Shut off the gas
(4) Take out spark plug
(5) Turn over the engine till water stops coming out
(6) Heat the plug till hot
(7) Put back together
(8) Turn over a till starts

Wierd. So many people playing in the mud and swamps, and not having any problems. And no one is surprised when one dunking kills his machine dead?
