Default 450s no spark UPDATE-Fixed

Hi guys, newbie here.

Have owned my 450s since new. Have put three batterie in it in 9 years. On the third battery it lasted about 6 months and then the quad stopped charging the battery.

After having to charge the battery about three times, I got out my service manual. Did the regulator rectifier checks and had no voltage at the regulator. All the wiring to the stator coil checked out fine. Found a bad 30amp main fuse after several hours of frustration and wire checking, however the quad was still running prior to me working on it. Got the fuse replaced and all was good.

Put it back together and now it won't start. No spark at the plug or plug wire. Did the stop switch test and ignition switch test, all good. I tried to test the ignition coil voltage and the meter read 000. Does this mean my ignition coil is bad?? Will the dealer test the ignition coil for me? Is there something else I could check before ordering parts?? Could I have burnt something up by charging the battery with it still installed??

TIA

Brandon

I think you need a special adaptor to check the coil voltage...just do the resistance check on the coil to see if its good. I would strongly doubt the coil is bad. Check the kill switch, and make sure you got all the wires and connectors hooked back up. Does the neutral light work?

I don't remember seeing a resistance check in the service manual. Yes the neutral light is on when I turn on the key. I checked the engine stop switch and the ignition switch per the manual. How would I check the resistance on the ignition coil? If I took the coil to the dealer could they check it??

I also read about checking the continuity of the wires from the ECM to the Stator coil plug. I haven't done this yet as i am working alone and have not removed the front fender yet.

There isnt a procedure for ohming it out, they suggest doing the peak voltage check. You could ohm the primary side, and make sure it isnt a short or open. Have you tried removing the cap off the wire, and holding that end about 1/4 inch from ground, and then cranking it over?

Yes I have done the spark check also as outlined in the manual. I am not very eletrical savvy so I am not sure what you mean by ohming it out.

I know how to read resistance and continuity and how to read voltage. But most other functions are new to me.

Ohming it out,is same as checking resistance. Because of there being no specs, id just check to see if theres a direct short or open. Id be very surprised if the coil was bad. Is it posible to swap out the coil with another quad? Just to check for spark?

to check resistance you mean on the wires going to the coil or the coil itself. Where would i connect the test leads to check resistance on the wires or on the coil itself?

If the coil is not the problem what would be the cause, other than the wiring, since I have ruled out the stator coil and have also done the regulator/rectifier tests as outlined in the manual? I have not checked the regulator/rectifier, just the wires to the connector that plugs into it.

first, recheck all your connections, you may have missed one, or not have one plugged in tightly. On a 98 model there should be an ohm spec for the ignition coil, however I highly doubt that its the problem. Im guessing that theres a plug still undone or one not plugged in tightly.

If you just want to do an ohm test on the coil, I would look for about 0.5-2.0 ohm on the primary side, and 4K-8K ohm on the secondary side without the spark plug cap on, if you test with the plug cap on add another 5Kohm to the reading.

It was the regulator/rectifier harness plug. I actually had to take it off the frame and use both hands to plug it in til it clicked. Runs and cranks. I just hope the battery will charge now.

Will the quad still run if the main 30 amp is blown?? Could this have been the reason it wasn't charging before? Or did I blow the fuse working on it?

I guess I'll find out if it will charge the battery or not.

Thanks again for all the help

It probably didnt charge because the plug wasnt fully engaged on the rectifier. It wont run with the fuse blown.
