Default 1986 250trx Fourtrax electrical problem

I am brand new to this forum and have a question. I just bought a 1986 250trx Fourtrax which has some problems and I need help.
I just put in a new battery and it will start with kick starter and run although rough and dies sometimes. But this topic is about the electric starter . When I press the starter it does nothing. Not a click or anything. I can start it with the kick starter. The lights do not work either when running. The front brake master cylinder is shot and does not have any pressure at all. I guess the starter problem could be a number of things but what should I check first?
Thanks

when pushing the elec starter you should hear a click coming from the relay. it near the battery on the back. if not check for continuity from the relay to battery ect...

Well, I was able to take the fenders off in order to get to the wireing next to the battery to check connectivity as you suggested. I found a connector that was not plugged in correctly/at all. I plugged it in and the starter works now. Thanks for the advice. If I can get it to idle right I will be ready to go.
