Running synthetic oil in 400ex ?
#1
Ready to change the oil in my 07' 400ex for the first time. I have probably two tanks of gas ran through it . Is it ok to change to a synthetic yet or should the clutch and engine wear in further ? I am thinking polaris 0w-40 or Mobil 1 fully synthetic . Is there any problems with this ?
Thanks,
D.

Once it is broken in on petroleum oil, you can switch to synthetic. Be sure the oil is motorcycle specific API SG/JASO MA. The MA rating insures that it is ok for your wet clutch. Be careful, becasue car/diesel oils may contain friction modifers that will make your clutch slip, and they can't have as robust an additive package as motorcycle oils.
Synthetics have huge advantages over petroleum oil, but keep in mind that there are three different types of synthetics. As I recall, Polaris and Mobil 1 are PAO synthetics. My preference is the ester synthetics, which are superior to PAO's in some ways, but cost more.

I have run Maxima Extra, 100% ester based synthetic in all my quads/dirt bikes for years now. My engines last forever and a day!
