400ex vs. z400

My EX has the basic mods I listed in your other post, yet fifth gear pinned down a desert wash a stock Z will slowly walk away from me. The EX has the advantage in low end torque, and the Z has the advantage on the top end. Do lots of tight trail riding if you want to beat the Z.

THE Z IS FASTER. I HAVE A 400 W/ EXHAUST JET AND AIRBOX LID OFF AND A COMPLETELY STOCK Z WILL PULL ALL DAY. I THINK IF YOU GET A GOOD HOLESHOT IT WOULD BE CLOSE BUT IF HE JUMPS ON YOU ITS ALL OVER. UNLESS HE MISSES A GEAR.

It makes no sense to try and do extreme performance mods on the low end machines anyway. Sure, years ago when a 400 was the top of the line it made sense, but now with 450-700cc machines out there, one should trade up to something bigger and not sacrifice reliability by tearing into a prefectly good engine!
