Default 2007 Rubicon In The Rough

We just got back from an elk hunt here in Montana. We were in some really rugged country. One of the trails we took was 28 miles of steep trail with huge rocks, creek crossings, mud and steep terrain. The Rubi did great, better than any of the other ATV's. I was wishing I had IRS though. I also scraped the mud flaps on the bottom of my front fenders constantly. I will be cutting them off even with the bottom of the fender. She ran a little rich at 12,000 feet, but I will leave my jetting where it is because most of my riding is between 5,000' and 9,000'. Overall, I was very happy with the performance of the Rubi, especially the tranny. I could crawl so slowly in low range to manuever over the big rocks and it saved my hands from constantly breaking on the down hill. I just wish I had taken more pics. My freind Steve has some better ones of us on the rocky trails I'll post later. Here are a couple.

All the elk were lounging on private property. We got skunked.

hope you have a flat shootin gun and a bi pod and killer scope with nosler tips or something, those look like some crazy far shots! as for the rubicon- leave the mud flaps as they do wonders keeping you 100% dry in wet conditions even though they sound bad when they scrape. Hey, did you dent any of your rims on that trip, wheever I ride threw rock like that the stock tires allow slate and bolders to dent my rims.

The hunt is not all about the kill and it looks like you had a great time. Beautiful country!! I second the motion to not cut off the flaps. They can be annoying, but they serve a good purpose and in mud and water you will regret it.

just make sure to use D-1 when your above 1/4 throttle as useing D-2 in heavy throttle conditions can cause the clutch to slip in some reported cases

Thanks for the tip. I do really like how Dr2 slows down the engine RPMs by shifting up faster and staying shifted up longer. I guess I'll leave the flaps alone. Also, you are right JRCAKC, the hunt isn't only about killing an animal. We had a great time, elk bugling back at us and just watching them in the rut.
