300 ex specs
#2
strike_fly i have a Haynes manual in paperback form it covers the TRX300EX and 400EX 1993 to 1999 models , but i have no way to scan pages from the manual for you ; but i can give you the specs. and information to do the job !
And by the way it cover's 1993 to 1999 model's but they should be the same as long as your engine is stock , The Valve specs. are : ( intake and exhaust ) 0.8 to 0.12 mm (0.003 to 0.005 Inch ) set them when engine is cold !
Valve clearance and adjustment : 1. The engine must be cool to touch for this maintenance proceegure .
2. Remove the seat and rear fenders .
3. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of battery .
4. Remove the front fender and the fuel tank .
5. Remove the spark plug this will make it easier to turn the crankshaft .
6. Remove the valve adjuster covers .
7. Remove the timing hole plug and the crankshaft hole plug .
8. Position the piston at TDC ( top dead center) on the compression stroke as follows: Turn the crankshaft untilll the mark on the flywheel is aligned with the timing notch on the crankcase . Wiggle the rocker arms - there should be some play .
If the rocker arms are tight , the engine is at TDC (top dead center) of the exhaust stroke .
Rotate the crankshaft one full turn , untill the timing mark and notch are aligned again .
Recheck to make sure the rocker arms are now loose .
10. To check the valves insert a feeler guage of the thickness of of 0.8 to 0.12 mm or 0.003 to 0.005 inch on both the Inake and exhaust valves .
I would set them both at 0.004 inch because in the middle of the specs. they won't need adjuting as often , the instruction's above are straight from my Haynes Manual ; word for word but the best way to find TDC (Top Dead Center ) on the compression stroke is to put your finger into the sparkplug hole and turn the crankshaft untill you feel pressure again't your finger !
This will be the compression stroke , then you just turn carnkshaft untill the timing mark and timing notch are alined ; the intake and exhaust valves will be closed and you can wiggle the rocker arms !
There's an adjusting screw with a locknut , you should be able to slide the feeler gauge between valve stem and rocker arms ; you should feel just a slight drag with incerting the feeler guage blade !
If it's to tight or to loose loosen the locknut with a boxed end wrench , then turn the adjusting screw untill the clearance is correct ; then hold the adjusting screw the manual shows the machanic using a 1/4 in. ratchet and socket turning and holding the adjuster screw while tighting the locknut !
But be sure to recheck them again to make sure they're still at the right setting before putting the cap's back on !
In the book it's say's to start with the intake valves first , but it doesn't matter because you can adjust both the intake and exhaust valves when you're on TDC of the compression stroke and they both set at the same spec. ! ..........
