Default how much ?

How many quarts of oil does a 97 honda 400 fourtrax hold and can a aftermarket oil filter be bought ?

Check your owners manual, if you do not have one, call your local dealer.

Just measure the volume of the old oil when you drain it. That will give you a rough estimate.....and add a little extra to account for the oil filter.

Or, just fill it until it shows full on the dipstick, then start it just briefly to circulate the oil (oil level will drop), then trun it off and top it up.

I am at work, so I don't have a manual but I am thinking 2.7 quarts. I know you will be fine if you buy 3 quarts if you are fixing to change it. 2 quarts will NOT be enough. No more often than you change oil in those things, I would just by the Honda filter. If you insist on saving a couple of bucks, I guess you could get a Parts Unlimited filter from any atv repair place or buy one off ebay.

Thanks, got to go the the dealer for the filter so I guess I can ask him about the oil to be sure. Thanks for the help.
