do honda's come factory filled with oil or not?
Just curious because my 400ex I bought yesterday I noticed it is over the full mark but quiet a bit, enough to where I drained some to bring it in operating range it was about 1/2 inch above the full mark. So, my guess is the dealer fills them right? if not what all do the dealers do to them before they're ready?
if honda does fill them is it a different oil than GN4 as in is the oil in them some sort of break in oil? also manual says use 10w30 but u can use ofcouse 10w40 etc.. however, the dealer told me that honda doesn't even make GN4 10w30 so I bought the 10w40 from the dealer. I just thought that was weird..if they call for 10w30 woulda figure that made gn4 in the 10w30 weight. |

the 400ex is a little different ,with its external oil tank. make sure the motor is warm and let it idle a couple minutes then shut it off and check it. You dont screw the dipstick in when checking it, just push it in until it stops then pull it out and check the level. I usually run mine down the dirt road a half mile and then let it idle before checking it. If you check it cold the level will be low.

Def. read the owners manual for the proper oil check procedure. whaleedited is right, quads with external oil tanks need a different procedure for checking levels otherwise it will be filled improperly.

I tell ya what I don't plan on mudding a sport quad or nothing but do plan to have it in the woods and I don't much like that oil tank sticking out in front like that...
ever been going through the woods on a utility and a stick come flying up from the front and wedge itself from the front end? thats right where that dang oil tank is...wonder if it's something easy to give trouble in a case like that. mine cold is approx. the width of my pinky finger over the top fill mark...thats why I asked are they factory oil filled or does the dealer do it...probably some saggy pants kid filled mine if the dealer does fill them. |

uh, its part of what they (should) do when they service it and get it ready to go out the door when you buy it. sounds like the dealer dropped the ball here. i havent had one yet that didnt come with all necessary fluids. but yes you should always read the owners manual. from the people i know with the 400ex none have had a issue with something jabbing a hole in the tank. im sure its possible though; i have heard of them stripping out the drain plug but that can happen on any bike. enjoy your new quad. a 400ex is criticised for being outdated, etc. but its a proven, rugged machine and can do allot.

weilder1717 Honda and all brand's of atv's , motorcycles come filled with oil before they ship to dealers ; Honda doesn't make the oil it's made for Honda with their Brand name on the bottle only !
The only time they don't put oil in an engine is when a new replacement is shipped in the crate , so someone like the 3 stooges who handle's the crate doesn't keep " This End Up " where oil is everywhere but in the engine's crankcase ! But they do put oil in the the atv's before they're shipped to the Dealerships , that's why some people change to their prefered oil before breakin ' ; if i were you i would go with a good brand name oil in 10w40 ; for my self i used regular Castrol GTX 10w40 in winter and 20w50 in summer ! I dont ride a sport quad because i'm a Bilateral Amputee ( both leg's off just below the knee's in 75' ) , and i'm sure you'll get more opinions from other member's ; but i've used it since 1989 and it has worked great for me with no problem's at all on wet sump(Engine/Tranny use same oil for lubrication ) quad's and all 3 atv's i've owned were oil cooled one without a fan and the other 2 had fan's ! My first was a 86' Honda TRX350 Foreman was oil cooled with fan but the fan stopped working the first month and i never fixed it for $129.99 for a new thermastadt and i never got around to hooking the fan to a toggle switch like one of my friend's did his Honda Foreman , the second was bought 2 week's before the " Blizzard " of 93' by my late cousin a 1993 Suzuki LT4WD 300 King Quad (no fan only oil cooler and all he used was Castrol GTX 20w50 year round ; and my present quad i bought Feb. 07 - 2006 Arctic Cat 400 FIS Auto 4x4 with the Suzuki 376cc Engine and Suzuki's Duramatic Belt Driven Clutch Tranny with oil cooler and fan ! Some who post on the forums use the oil that come's with their quad for breakin' then change to AMS Oil full synthetic after breakin' , while other's drain the oil that come's from the factory and change to Full Synthetic for breakin' and use their favorite brand Synthetic oil's from day one ; but i don't intend to wait as long to change oil and filter as the Synthetic blend's call for ! So i use the same oil in my 06' AC 400 Auto that i used in the first two , and my brother still has both of the other two quad's ; i use Regular Castrol GTX 10w40 winter and 20w50 summer with an API Rating SH and SG in the summer with no problem ! If it's good enough for Volswagon , Honda and Toyota's Engine's then it's good enough for atv engine's ; and $5.00 to $10.00 a quart i can change the Castrol 2 or 3 time's instead of once with the Sythetic blend's !....... |

Hi I have work at a Honda dealership part-time for around 8 years. The answer to your question is that Honda units come with oil in them. It is the shops job to check the oil and top off if needed. This is all listed in the predelivery and setup manual. In 2007 Honda started offering GN4 10W30W oil.If you check your oil when cold before startup the level will vary. You should check it according to your owners manual and you will have no problems.
