05 400 ex gear ratio improvements?

I have a 07 but have never ridden another one was just curious on the difference between mine and a 04 and under.

did they give them more bottom or top end, or what? all I ever see is "improved ratio"

I think they geared the later models up a little, but who cares? Anybody can tailor their gear ratios to whatever their personal taste is....that is the beauty of a chain dirve!!! Gearing changes are relatively cheap....so try some different ratios and see what works for you.

If you would like more bottom end, you can go smaller in front or bigger in back. If you want more top end, you can go bigger in front or smaller in back. 1 tooth in front = 3 teeth in back.

My 400 is pretty much a trail machine, so I like low end. I tried 1 tooth smaller in front and it was to much (couldn't keep the front end down). I ended up one tooth larger in rear as a compromise.

o ok, I wonder how much the top speed changed between 04's and under and 05's and up.

I may end up gearing mine a little lower myself as I would rather have the power a little lower in the rpm's than it is now.

I think the top end is about the same, somewhere around 60. I did the one tooth smaller in front, and its great. It accellerates harder, and can plug along nice and slow with the clutch fully out, in the rough going. Im not sure how much top end I lost, but I didnt spend much time at 60 anyway, so it doesnt matter.

I don't think it's the sprocket ratios that changed. I'm pretty sure it's the ratios within the transmission itself.

It was done, from my understanding, to improve the straightline acceleration to be equal to the Z400.

alright great! because a friend of mine has a kfx 400 maybe this will slighty help me out when we drag race he already knows his his faster...

however, his is a 03 from what I've read they improved the power on those in 05 so we might be close.....

That KFX engine has huge hop up potential, with just a few simple mods like opening up the airbox and an aftermarket muffler. Same with you Honda, but not as much as the Z and its clones....

i'll find out tomorrow were gonna ride.

any articles on the 05 changes anywhere? I haven't found where it tells what all they did and how they changed the ratios.
