Default timing question

ok...if you put a engine at top dead center, but its not on the compression stroke will it still fire.

question being, i just got my bike back from the shop. it ran fine till it jumped timing. bent two intake valves, got new ones. they put it back together and it ran like it was timed wrong, smoking and popping and what not. it has great compression and everything in the engine is new. and when i mean everything, i mean EVERYTHING!

what could be my prob?

Does sound like a timing issue. I'm not sure if quads will fire both compression and exahaust or not. I'm going to guess yes. I know vehicles do.

If the flywheel "T" is lined up and the camshaft is timed properly (2 index lines are flush with top of head) then it is timed.. ..

You did put the spring & plunger in the head under the camshaft for the decompressor to work properly..?

If that statement is true and I suspect it is than yes, it fires on compression and exhaust stroke. Right?

Most of them have the waste spark, and the plug fires at all tdc. I know for sure my 300ex had a waste spark, but I cant say for certain that the 400ex does.

Now that Ive thought about it...the spark comes from the pulse coil on the flywheel, so it must also fire at the tdc.
My question, ...do you suspect its firing at the wrong one, and thats why its hard to start, or do know its not firing on the correct tdc?
Have you checked the timing marks on the cam and crank, maybe its one tooth off.

Default timing question

everyone is right... i think. i just found out today for it to fire properly the flywheel mark has to be on the "t" mark. with out the cam and valve cover, on this particular motor, it will allways be on TDC.

my prob. was the main jet holder in the carb fell out. it didnt want to run right. i got it fixed and shes ready to go. thanks for the help guys!!!
