jiz:
Basically, a cam is a metal shaft with oval shaped lobes surrounding it. In most cases (as far as atv's go), it is located directly above the combustion chamber of your cylinder. As it rotates, the shape of the lobes determine how far your valves open (lift), and the length of time your valve stays open (duration). Therefore, the more lift and duration a cam has, the more fuel/air mixture is delivered into the combustion chamber, usually increasing horsepower or torque (depending on the specifications of the cam, or in other words, the "grind" of the cam).
However, be warned that a camshaft by itself will not increase your horspower dramatically. To achieve optimum results, it must be combined with other compatible mods (higher flow filter, exhaust, carb, etc.). In addition, if you purchase a "wild" enough cam, it may also be necessary to purchase stronger valve springs and have your rocker arms hardfaced in order to maintain the reliability of the engine.
