Default Need 400ex help

I have a 400ex that a guy from my work is asking me to work on. I have a question about getting it started. You have to pull start it and pop the clutch to get it started. When it is warm is will crank on it's on. I called one of the guys that he rides with that has the same ride and he said that the guy has the wrong "clutch plate" in the carb. What are some things that I can look for on the carb or any other ideas you guys have to help me get this handled. I work on cars alot and motorcycles but not many atvs. I am pretty good with a carb I just need to know where to start and what to look for. Any help would be great.

If its hard to start cold, but starts ok when warm..check the valve lash. He probably meant the choke plate, not the clutch plate.
