99 400ex with an HMF slip-on and a K&N filter with some kind of aftermarket lid. The lid is clear with a few open holes in it. It runs great with no smoking but the plug always looks carbon fouled. My starting habits have flooded it a few times. My real problem is my main jet. Previous owner used pliers to install it it appears. I also don't know what brand it is to compare it to a similar setup. I can make out a 165 pretty clearly, then the "plier scratches" and a "D". That's the only numbers I see on it. My pilot is still a 38. I will probably go to a 42 for easier cold starts. I may just keep the 165 ?? main jet in there as it runs good. The black plug and the hard starting have me concerned. I am going to check my valves while everything is apart. My pilot screw is 2 1/4 turns out. I haven't pulled the needle to see what clip it's on yet.

Any way to tell the jet brand ?????

The stock jets have the kstar type symbol right by the number. About the only way to know is to measure the diameter of the center hole. A stock 165 jet will measure 1.65mm. On kiehin jets, just move the decimal 2 places, and thats the hole diameter in mm
Try to not move the thumb throttle when starting. These carbs have accelerator pumps, and they flood the motor pretty easily.
Going to a #40 or #42 pilot, and readjusting the mixture screw, and throwing in a new Iradium, should go a long way towards helping cold starts. Stock plugs work good, but Iradium resists fouling alot more.
for your mods, a stock 165 might be a tad big, so it could be a dynojet jet.

 

I found some instructions on Dynojets in pdf on the web and I thought it said there was an adapter used ???? for the main to thread into the needle jet holder ???? Anyone know about this ? I see my 38 has that kstar so it's original. It runs great with no smoking. I just have to watch my thumb when starting. My 165 main doesn't have the kstar or an adapter (Dynojet?) so I'll have to measure it. I will see about getting an Iradium plug and check my mixture when I get it back together.
