Default help noob get atv working :D

if u dont want the long read u can scroll to 3rd to last paragraph..

hey guys.. i made a post between dirt bikes and atvs awhile ago and although i might sell my quad to get a bike, id like to ride my atv a little more before i make the change.

After my atv was sitting all winter i took it out and it wouldnt start cause of shitty battery. I bought a new battery and it started up but would die out. Me and my friend THOUGHT we raised the idol (the screw I thought was for the idol i think is the one for the float? im not sure its the screw to the right of the actual idol.. float right?)

so if the screw to the right of the idol is the float, we raised that and it worked and i was able to ride it. I put air in the tires and went riding with my friends a half week later...damn was it fun haha.

Anyway, the other day i started my quad up with the choke and i had to keep it alive with gas but would eventually die and i couldnt really keep it going. Me and my friend took the carb apart thinking it might be dirty but it wasnt that bad at all.

so we messed with the timing and the next day it started up (what bullshit lol) but when i go into second its like outta whack, i think we through the timing off.

For a stock machine, is the timing basically the same for all? Like all you guys who have 400ex's is the screw for the float (or screw to the right of the idol haha not sure) about 1.5 turns out from completely in? and the idol has an estimate of turns?

I wanna see if i set the timing right if itll be ok. BTW i think the quad is backfiring (popping from exhaust?) which i heard means its too lean or something.

Any help?! Thanks so much and sorry for the long read. I appreciate any help!

short and sweet. stator cover(left side). 2 hex caps. 1 is a 9mm. the other 6mm. remove both. 17mm socket in the 9mm hole. thats your crank. turn it and look through the 6mm hole. theres marks. 2 ( ll ), and 2 ( l F l T ) marks. on the fly wheel. line up the ( l T ) mark with the little slit in the 6mm hole. not the T but the line b4 it. make sure its on the compression stroke. remove your valve cover.look at the marks on the side of your cam. LEFT should be like ( --- ) the TOP should be like( l ) and the right would be ( --- ).

thats topdead center.

What screw did you turn the pilot screw ..?.. The initial opening for the pilot screw depends on the year (example) 99-02 open to 2 1/4 turns , 05-08 open to 2 turns ..

The ignition timing is fixed on the bike , what timing did you move ..?

the idol screw and this tinier screw a couple inches to the right of it. Is that the pilot screw? Its right by the choke when its in the OFF position.

Thanks!

yea ive never adjusted those screws lol.. I dont go into the interior like that.

I only took aparty my carb once with my friend and put it back together.. Do you think certain screws coulda accidentally adjusted like that or do i purposely need to turn them in order to change it?

Also, is the idle screw the one like almost directly behind the choke when its in the off position? and if so, what is the screw a couple inches to the left, like behind the choke when its on ON.

Those screws ive adjusted way to much and have NO idea where they are supposed to be... help?

Thanks for your help so far

PS I just ordered a spark plug cause i think mine is a little messed up

The screw you turned must have been the idle screw .. I would first try the new plug (if yours is bad) ..

This is the idle screw

yes i turned that one and have no idea where its supposed to be now...

do you know how many turns out from all the way in it should be?

also, whats the smaller blow a couple inches the right of the idle screw, its right behind the choke when its OFF. I messed with that a little and dont know where it should be..

The idle is 1400 plus/minus 100 RPM .. I'm not sure what else you turned there is a drain screw for the float bowl ..
