Default 400ex running hot

a guy called me last night wantin to trade a 02 or 03 400ex to my old 87 bronco.i am considering tradin cause i have a 99 warrior that i cant keep axle bearings in.well he said they just had a timing chain put in it and now it runs hot.he said it will crank and you can ride i for a few minutes the it get pretty hot.what do you guys think could be the problem and do you think it would be worth tradin. the bronco i have hasnt been drove over 50 miles in last 2 years combined and cant really afford the insurance or gas for it.oh yea the 400 has alot of accessories on it.

Wild guess, one or two teeth off on the cam timing. I've seen way loose valves do this also.

Yeah check the valves for either too tight or loose.
