250ex upgrade
#3
The 250EX's main weakness is handling, not power.
We just bought a 250EX last week, it's not too far behind a 300EX as far as pep goes; but the handling differences are very noticable...
It's a little shorter and narrower than a 300EX and the shocks are non-adjustable with an inch less travel than a 300EX.
The first things we're gonna do to ours is:
- get some aftermarket front shocks
- put 400EX tires on the rear
- put wheel-spacers on all fours
- remove the airbox lid and re-jet accordingly.
... if that's not enought improvement for you, then you can always get a header/pipe and rev kit.
But if you're planning on boring it out already, why not get a 300EX or 400EX???
the only thing left to do is bore it

if you're a casual trail rider, I'd get the 250EX
because it has no clutch, easier to use reverse, no chain to adjust or wear out, a better snorkel-type air intake that's more forgiving in water crossings, and better ground clearance.
if you're a more agressive rider, I'd get the 300EX because it has more suspension travel, a wider stance, and more power! I'd at least get rid of the balloon rear tires though
